Title: Principal Software Engineer

Abstract:With the late surge of OSGI based technologies in the enterprise this short presentation attempts to breach the gap between the theoretical and the practical by very briefly introducing OSGI using Equinox and Apache Felix; followed by design considerations and prerequisites. The presentation then moves to what OSGI is missing and what pitfalls may follow once OSGI is selected in the enterprise. A few books will be highlighted to the audience and short mention of Spring OSGI and of course what book and documentation available to explore the SpringSource view of OSGI under the umbrella of Spring DM.

The presentation will conclude with a short overview on how Websense has utilized this technology to deploy it’s enterprise product.

At the end of this presentation the audience, should be able to at least create a very simple OSGI based component and perhaps pursue any architectural changes needed to adopt OSGI. All code demoed in class as well as all slides will be available at the end of the session.

Bio:
Willhelm Lehman’s software engineering career started in the early 1990s; as he was introduced to this industry, he chose to focus on operating systems and software deployment models. He later discovered J2EE, which he used sporadically until he was introduced to the Spring Framework. Willhelm is now a Spring Framework evangelist and uses the concepts introduced by the Spring Framework in every software development aspect – this includes non-J2EE projects.

Willhelm is currently focusing on the synergy of software development and software deployment. He has presented at JavaOne on behalf of InstallShield why Java-based deployment solutions are superior to that of shell-based deployment solutions.
