Title: "Teaching Java: Motivating young minds to think about code"

Abstract: Vic Wintriss and June Clarke are teaching 50 kids to program Java ranging from 9 to 16 years old at a small non-profit school in Carmel Valley. They have developed distinctive methods to make programming fun and sticky for kids. Wintriss students' learning is self-driven and made possible by volunteers who are professional programmers from the San Diego community. We will show some of the methods we use to enable us to keep the kids engaged and coding constructively for a full class with practically no lecture-style teaching.

Vic is the Founder of Wintriss Technical Schools. He is an electrical engineer and founded a number of companies before finding his second career as an educator. He loves building robots but pretends he does it just for the benefit of the school.

Bio: June is the Lead Teacher at Wintriss. She spent 10 years practicing to be a teacher by coding Java at startups, for the Navy, and with lots of odd jobs in between. She runs Agile San Diego and is a reviewer for the Agile 2013 conference. She is ecstatic to be living in the internet age, fosters the SD tech scene, loves tinkering and hoppy beer.
